I’ve been doing food trips long before I started this blog, usually we go to an area and try a bunch of restaurants there. Recently we did another one and did some scouting along the Tomas Morato area and chanced upon this undiscovered gem of a restaurant. The place is called LoLa Cafe + Bar and it’s just gorgeous. It’s a mom-and-pop kind of restaurant that serves really nice comfort food.
Upon entering the place you’ll first see their nice al fresco dining area. It just gives this very nice laid back and homey feel.
LoLa Cafe + Bar serves various comfort food that got us really excited. They opened October last year so some tweaks and the inclusion of new dishes to the menu is very likely to happen. Oh and we got a bit carried away and got a lot of stuff 😀
First was the choice of drinks, and like I said it was definitely too early for me to be be gulping on some alcoholic stuff so we got their mocktails instead, some really nice and refreshing non-alcoholic beverages.
Mint leaves, grapefruit, apple juice.
Ginger, lime, soda, apple juice.
I really liked their Rio, the mocktail was light and refreshing with some tart notes from the grapefruit then the apple juice base balances it off, then every so often you get these spike of lovely flavor from the mint leaves. And I must say I love almost everything with mint and this is no exception. Their tosca on the other hand gives a more complex flavor, that hint of ginger makes all the difference. My friends absolutely loved it.
Mixed greens, bacon, poached egg, balsamic vinaigrette.
Decent salad with the inclusion of poached egg, I just love that moment when you hit the egg and it’s golden yolk-y awesomeness bleeds out. Simple salad, got most of the bacon bits though, can’t help it 😀
With caramelized onions, grilled honey green apple, served with crostini bread.
Now this is one awesome starter dish. First things first, I just love the presentation the whole thing is served on a tile. The camembert cheese was really nice with a crumbly crunchy outer layer, then you hit the center with it’s oh-so-good mild, slightly salty and buttery flavor. Then there’s the caramelized onions and grilled honey green apple that makes for a nice contrast of flavor and texture. Really good stuff.
Two pieces of English muffin with beef tapa and caramelized onion, poached egg, and hollandaise sauce.
Their take on this classic breakfast favorite was definitely a stroke of genius. Instead of ham, bacon or salmon they used generous strips of beef tapa sweet in flavor and really tender to the bite, that was the first thing that’ll hit your palate the beef tapa bits with it’s mild sweetness and meaty awesomeness then you hit the poached egg and the hollandaise sauce and you’ll get this awesome creamy, rich, savory flavor. It was definitely provided a great contrast in flavor that we absolutely loved. This one got raves from all of us, a definite mus-try! 😀
Smoked fish with olive oil, chili flakes, fresh tomatoes.
It’s no secret that pasta’s one of my weakness so we tried some of their pasta dishes as well. Their Spicy Tinapa Pasta is really something else. Got a bite and I loved this flaky smoky flavor I got from the fish then I got some of the chili flakes and that nice tinge of spiciness left me wanting for more. This is one awesome pasta dish for it’s balanced and interesting flavor.
Cream sauce with portabello mushrooms and truffle oil.
I love truffle! So we had to try their Tartufo Pasta, and with most dishes that I try that has truffle oil, most often that not, that toe-curling aroma of the truffle is only present when the dish is served just a little spike of lovely aroma then that’s it. And fortunately it was not the case here. We certainly took our time on taking pictures of the stuff we got and the pasta was fine when i got a fork-full I got this lovely aroma from the truffle oil that sent chills down my spine. Got a bite and I love it’s creamy sauce base with a hint of cheese then there’s the earth-y and rich flavors from the portabello mushrooms. This is another awesome pasta dish that’s a must-try.
So you might think with all the stuff we had we’ll be banging ourselves on the wall, stuffed with all those good stuff, but we can’t pass on their entrees so we also tried some of them 😀 😀
Beef brisket, tripe, veggies, peanut sauce.
My friends really liked kare-kare so we got this one. Rich peanut based sauce that we all love. The meat bits (beef brisket and tripe) was cooked beautifully and all tender. Then I hit it with some good bagoong for that nice contrast in flavor. And yep it got us going for more rice 😀
LoLa’s version of Kaldereta, with a spicy twist.
Their take on this well-loved Filipino dish is rather interesting. They added kimchi to it, oh yes you read that right, Kimchi + Kaldereta in one dish. 🙂 Basically it’s the same rich tomato based sauce, with beef, potatoes and some veggies but then there’s this nice faint spicy notes that you get in every bite. That tinge of spiciness definitely got us wanting for more, more kaldereta, and more rice 😀 This one’s a must-try!
And if there’s anything that we can’t pass on, it’s DESSERTS so we got all their sweet tooth offerings as well 😀
For now they only serve three items for desserts, I’m sure they’ll add more stuff to it for the following months tho. 😀
Graham crust with banana, custard, and a dash of chocolate.
Their banoffee pie was nice, light custard base then you hit the graham crust for that extra sweetness and texture, then there’s the slices of bananas, fruity, creamy that’s not too sweet.
Chocolate-y cupcake with chocolate ganache frosting.
Simple chocolate cupcake with rich belgian chocolate ganache frosting. The frosting was just lovely, as I’d like to lick it to the last drop, the cupcake base on the other hand was not as moist as I’d like it to be. Don’t get me wrong it’s still good, yummy and all. But I prefer my cupcakes to be really, really moist 😀
Crisp yet slightly chewy pistachio docquoise, creamy nutty pastry creme, and perfectly ripe mango.
Of all the dessert stuff we got, I must say, this one’s my favorite. The base is this nice light and chewy pistacho, then you hit the cream that’s really light in flavor, then there’s the roughly chopped pistachio bits that gave a really interesting contrast in texture. And to top it off are really sweet mango bits that I just love. Good stuff, a definite must-try!
VERDICT: LoLa Cafe + Bar serves really good comfort food that got raves from all of us. Good food coupled with amazing ambiance, it’s definitely a place that you should check out. This undiscovered gem at Quezon City is definitely worth a return trip. Getting there might be a bit of a challenge tho, just remember it’s near Scout Tuazon and is on the same Street as Zirkoh in Tomas Morato.
VALUE FOR MONEY: The menu items are reasonably priced and the stuff that we got are good for sharing, so good value for money.
