HEAT RISES! EDSA Shangri-la‘s buffet restaurant, HEAT recently launched 8 new signature dishes prepared by 8 of their talented specialty chefs. Trying the new signature dishes is like a nice gastronomic journey, with inspiration from different parts of the world, it was great savouring specialties from their different chefs, all quite good, from classic staples to familiar dishes reinvented to further titillate our palate.
Curry Seafood Dim Sum by Chef Andy Liew – these gorgeous pockets of joy are really good! Imagine plump seafood pieces that packs a bit of spice from the curry and then there’s the thin, delicate piece of dough that it’s encased with. I would love to eat this all day, so good! NIU BY VIKINGS – They recently celebrated their anniversary and in lieu with this they launched new signature dishes that will be available in the restaurant for a limited time only. Their efforts in pushing for fine quality food in the buffet scene here in Manila is laudable and here’s some of the new signature dishes that we tried.
We started the dinner with amuse bouche of Avocado and Shrimp Panna Cotta & Caprese Mousse. This is quite good, I love the balance of flavors from the refreshing and slightly sweet avocado base with the shrimp and then you hit these tartlets with fresh tomatoes and basil. OUDON RESTAURANT – After the wave of ramen houses in the metro, sometimes you crave for something different, perhaps something with a lighter soup base but equally filling. Last night I tried this new restaurant in The Forum South Global that serves good udon sets.
This is their Tenzaru Oudon that’s chewy, thick udon noodles served cold, you have to dip it to their nice light and flavorful broth along with other components for a more complex taste. It’s also served with an assortment of tempura and a bowl of chahan (fried rice).

THE GRILL BOY – A good fast food restaurant at the newly opened Spark Place, Cubao serving affordable Filipino food staples that we all know and love. For those of you that is not familiar with the brand, The Grill Boy was a brainchild by the original owner of Dencio’s, it’s like a fast food version of the more popular, casual dining place.

HALAL GUYS – The wait is over as this popular staple in the US opens its first store in Manila at SM Megamall (Mega Food Hall). Get your chicken and gyro cravings fixed – basically everything’s the same for their store here, the big, big servings, the tasty meat and that luscious, oh-so-good white sauce that I know you all know and love.
They’re calling the biggest serving, New York Size, basically a big platter of the good stuff. This is their Gyro over Rice – that flavorful meat with the awesome rice base and then you eat it with the fantastic piece of bread and devour the rest with the other ingredients. GOOD! SNAG BOX – A new meek, little kiosk at the Spark Place Cubao that serves some of the best affordable, gourmet hotdog sandwiches that I’ve tried. Seriously their treats are ridiculously affordable and the quality of the food is good, such a great deal. We tried all of their sandwiches and these are the stuff that I liked.
This is their Rustic Onion Medley that’s a delicious mix of onions, cream cheese glaze and cheddar. This is so good, between the slight sweetness from the onions to that zing that you get from the bell peppers and then you hit the succulent piece of sausage and all that goodness is encased in a good piece of bread. JOHNNY KAHUKU’S HAWAIIAN SHRIMP HOUSE – We had a fantastic feast for a lunch at this restaurant in Newport Mall of Resorts World Manila. Everything that we tried during the lunch was just fantastic it went above and beyond my expectations. Johnny Kahuku will also be opening their second branch in Eastwood Mall, Libis.
This is their Special Seafood Poke of seared blackened tuna, salmon sashimi, grilled squid, white shrimps and that awesome miso-shoyu dressing that coats everything and further titillates the palate. This is really, really good I’d gladly eat one serving and that’s coming from a guy that’s normally not a fan of seafood. Everything from the flavor combination to the play on texture to the quality of sashimi and other seafood components – just fantastic! HONEY CREME – Another big brand in the organic / premium soft serve category opens its first store in the Philippines. A simple menu of eye candy soft serve treats varying from the most simple, plain organic with honey comb to the more head turning caramel popcorn and organic mixed greens.

COCKTAIL COLLAB – A new dining offer at the Long Bar of Raffles Makati where guests and diners will be treated to bespoke cocktails prepared by their award winning bartenders. Basically you choose your flavour and liquor preference, the procedure / methods for the cocktail and you get to choose on what glass they’ll serve it and finally the name of the cocktail, how cool is that?!
BACON! Yes a bacon cocktail! And it’s actually really good – pieces of smoked bacon, black label, dissarono and green chartreuse. It had these nice smoky notes running in the background and then that amaretto flavour hits you along with the refreshing base to balance the nose and palate. GOOD! HAPPY HOUR MANILA – A new bar and restaurant in City Golf Plaza serving some uncomplicated food and drinks. I had dinner here with some foodie friends where we tried almost everything on the menu, cocktails included.

POMODORO PIZZA KITCHEN – A nice discovery, hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Kapitolyo, Pasig serving some really good pizza and pasta dishes at very affordable prices. We tried a number of their dishes and I really liked the stuff that we tried, was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food they serve here and how affordable the food was. They also have an event to celebrate Pasta Day on August 26, 12pm to 10pm where they sell all their pasta dishes at P50!!!
My absolute favorite from the pasta dishes that we tried, so simple yet so good! Pasta Con Pesce of fresh tinapa flakes filled with smoky and savory flavor sauteed in garlic and olive oil and tossed with the wonderfully cooked pasta. This is very good, a definite must-try! FAT Restaurant – A new awesome concept by the chef of Locavore, one of the more famous restaurant in the Kapitolyo area. I really, really like the concept of this restaurant – unapologetic and heavy on flavor and the same playful interpretations by Chef Mikel Zaguirre, everything we tried for lunch was awesome! From the simple bar mix to the more indulgent main dishes and luscious desserts, FAT has to be one of my favorite new restaurant that opened this year.
GREEN TEA CHICHARON – Awesome combination of two things that I love – deep fried, crispy pork rind (chicharon) and green tea!!! Big chunks of really crispy and beautifully fried chicharon pieces topped with green tea salt and served with a pickled vegetable relish and an awesome dipping sauce that’s a combination of honey and pinakurat.
