Shawarma Guys: Playful Takes on Familiar Persian Food

Tried Shawarma Guys at Fort Strip the other day, where we had a nice quick dinner enjoying some playful takes on familiar Persian food. Good meat, the simplest of flavors; inventive and amusing. A nice and hip shawarma place around the area, ideal for some small bites or a filling meal with friends.

A personal favorite; The Blackbenny Platter – succulent pieces of chicken, lamb, beef, and beef tenderloin kebab on a bed of buttered basmati rice, a meat lover’s go-to meal.

First, a refreshing drink to go with the food, I tried their Lassi, that’s a yogurt based beverage.

Available in Mango and Strawberry flavor, the mango variant has a more sweeter blend, creamy with a nice sweet mango flavor. For a more tart and fruity taste try the strawberry lassi, the hint of tartness to the drink makes it a nice palate cleanser as well, very simple and refreshing, it has a more pronounced yogurt flavor.

Garlic Ox Brain – A very sinful appetizer dish. Studded with some crispy garlic bits on top, it provides a nice crunch to the bite and a spike of flavor, then you hit the ox brain bits oh so flavorful and it just melts in your mouth. Then there’s the lemon to cut down the richness of the fatty, melt-in-your mouth goodness of the ox brain.

Starting with the most common of shawarma, we tried the beef variant. And it’s really good, tender beef chunks oozing with flavor with a distinct punch of spices, then you hit the veggie bits maintaining this nice tinge of crunch. Then you hit it with the sauces, creamy with some faint notes of garlic flavor, then the other one’s spicy giving a nice heat to the meat’s flavor, leaving you wanting for more.

Devoid of any gaminess, I really enjoyed their lamb shawarma, a nice blend of spices highlights the flavor of the meat. Then there’s the veggie bits for varying texture.  Hit it with the yogurt sauce and I liked the creaminess it gives to the dish balancing the strong flavor of the lamb.

SINFUL! Their sisig shawarma’s divine! Oh glorius, flavorful sisig bits with a faint hint of crunch to the bite, then you hit the fatty bits and it’s all good! A good dose of that yogurt garlic sauce gives this wonderful creaminess to it, further highlighting the flavor of the meat. Then some of that chili sauce to give it a nice hint of spice, it’s sinfully good.

Oh yes, it doesn’t get any better than this, bacon loving brothers and sisters rejoice. Crispy bacon strips; meaty and crispy encased in soft and slightly chewy pita wrap. A great example that everything is better with bacon. The bacon strips is more on the lean side though, I just wish there’s better meat-to-fat ratio, or more of the fatty bits please! But to be fair the well balanced flavors makes this rad take on the traditional shawarma a successful one.

Tender and aromatic, the spiciness to it was just enough to titillate the taste buds. The chicken pieces were very tender and is enveloped by this nice aromatic and creamy sauce that packs a nice hint of spiciness, leaving you wanting for more. It’s flavorful but not cloying.

A meat lover’s go-to meal; succulent pieces of chicken, lamb, beef and beef tenderloin kebab on a bed of buttered basmati rice served with pita and some grilled tomatoes. The kebab was well seasoned, a medley of spices to highlight the meat, then you hit it with the sauce for a good dose of creaminess.  All meat goodness that will leave you wanting for more, more rice 😀

Then goes our sweet endings, straight from URBN Bar and Kitchen (since they don’t have dessert stuff) we got the Mango Cheesecake and Chocolate Love-ah Cake.

It’s no secret that I have this obsession about chocolate lava cakes, I just love the varying flavor, texture, and temperature when you eat it, URBN’s Chocolate Love-Ah Cake takes it further with the inclusion of some rock salt, those salty bits gives a nice hint of salty flavor as you get lost in the warm chocolate cake base, the gooey chocolate stuffing and the subtle flavor of the vanilla ice cream that’s cold and comforting. The nuts on the base was a nice touch, gives that nice hint of crunch to the bite for a more interesting texture.

Their mango cheesecake was more on the creamy side, and I definitely miss the tartness and the salty bits of their salted caramel cheesecake. Generous mango slices topped on a creamy cheesecake base, drizzled with more fruity goodness with their mango based sauce.

I really enjoyed our dinner at Shawarma Guys, some really rad and creative takes on some traditional Persian food. Also, their launching this happy hour promo starting next week, Buy one, take one on their Bacon and Sisig Shawarma meals, awesome!

VERDICT: Shawarma Guys serves some creative takes on some classic Persian food, I really liked their bacon and sisig shawarma and that blackbenny platter with all its meaty goodness. I’m definitely going back for more and hopefully they have more rad shawarma variants available by then 😀

VALUE FOR MONEY: For the serving size, the quality of the meat, and considering this is at the Fort Strip area, the menu items are reasonably priced.

  1. I love eating shawarma but they are just so hard to eat. Though, I have a technique on how to eat them without getting messy.

    The desserts are just so mouthwatering! That love-ah cake is like oozing with chocolatey goodness! And also the mango cheesecake is such an eye-candy! whew! 😀

  2. OMG I can’t stand the food here. Forgive me. Especially the ox brain, these delicacies are too much for my vegetarian diet. :)) Maybe if someone will pay me a million pesos then I’ll give it a try. :p

  3. I am definitely digging the Lamb and Sisig Shawarma (a new thing for me in terms of using sisig). I’ll make sure to taste both when I find myself in the Fort Strip.

  4. Oooh.. Everything just looks so delish! I haven’t tried Shawarma Guys yet but the boyf who did, loved their Sisig Shawarma 😀 I really should visit this soon!
